On 9 February 1801, the second coalition war against France came to an end. Immediately afterwards, Joseph Haydn presented his new German oratorio The Seasons, first to a small circle of aristocrats on 24 April, then in May at the Vienna Hofburg and twice in December at the Burgtheater. Following the description of the creation of the world in the oratorio The Creation, the new work was dedicated to the use of this creation by mankind, whereby the sequence of the seasons was also meant as a parable for the course of human life in general. The action takes place - in keeping with the times - cheerfully in an idyllic country setting. An air of peace descended over the heads of the enthusiastic audience and enchanted their hearts. Regardless of the course of time, this magic continues to this day. Our concert is intended to prove this.
